Didi Taihuttu and his family—famously known as the “Bitcoin Family”—have adopted radical new security methods after a spike in violent crimes targeting crypto holders. They’ve shredded their 24-word Bitcoin seed phrase into four encrypted fragments, etching them onto fireproof steel plates and hiding each fragment on a different continent. This ensures no single person—or even a captive—can reconstruct their full wallet access.

Taihuttu, who went all-in on Bitcoin in 2017 and now travels with his three daughters, shared via CNBC that “even if someone held me at gunpoint, I can’t give them more than what’s on my phone,” emphasizing the limited exposure to immediate risk.

To further bolster security, the family abandoned hardware wallets entirely—citing concerns over backdoors and centralized vulnerabilities—and now rely on a hybrid system combining blockchain encryption, geographic distribution, and multi-signature hot wallets for everyday trading.

Their security overhaul is part of a broader trend: kidnappings and extortion attempts targeting crypto executives have surged in France, the U.S., and Morocco. High-profile incidents include the abduction and torture of Ledger’s co-founder and attempted kidnappings of crypto exchange families.

The Bitcoin Family has even curtailed its public presence—limiting travel updates and avoiding countries like France—to reduce exposure.
